Toothbrushing

  • Brush for 2 minutes twice a day
  • Brush last thing at night and on one other occasion.
  • Toothpaste with a concentration of 1, 4500 ppm Fluoride is recommended in St Helens
  • Children under 3 years should use a smear amount of fluoride toothpaste
  • Over 3 years should use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
  • It is important to Spit NOT Rinse your mouth after toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste
  • Brushing should start as soon as the first primary (baby) tooth erupts
  • Parents or carers should supervise toothbrushing until the age of 7

Diet

  • Breast feeding provides the best nutrition for babies
  • From the age of 6 months infants should be introduced to a free –flowing cup, dummies and bottle discourage from the age of 1
  • Sugar should not be added to weaning foods and drinks
  • The amount and frequency of consumption of sugars should be reduced and restricted to mealtimes
  • Avoid sugar-containing foods and drinks at bedtime

Dental Visits

  • Regular dental visits are essential for everyone to prevent dental pain and oral conditions including oral cancer
  • Everyone should visit the dentist at least once a year or as often as advised by their dental team
  • Stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake within daily limits to reduce the risk of oral cancer
